Crystal Radio Coil and Capacitor

#1

Post by KD8DEY »

Theres a guy on E-Bay selling Diamond weave coils using 660/46 Litz on E-Bay.
I have heard of Spider Weave, But never heard of Diamond weave.

I do know that 660/46 is supposed to be the "Holy Grail" of wire for "Performance crystal Sets though".
And 240uH should be about perfect for one of Peebles variable capacitors..

RF Parts has one too, BUT I dont know if it's from the same manufacturer

Is it just me, or does "Googling Yourself" just not sound right?..

Y'know? As a kid I ran across plans for making an AM receiver with nothing more than a razor blade from a safety razor, a safety pin, pencil lead, coil of wire and a high impedance earphone.
Damned if it didn't work. From that, a career in IT was born.
Don't ask, I dunno. But I'm back to radio after years of being amazed by computers. I'm also feeling much better, too.

Did one of those in my Yute as well :Have_a_Nice_Day: .
Bought a few packs of enameled wire from Radio Shack (R.I.P.)

Never built anything that was considered a "Performance" Crystal radio though.

"Crystal radio" and "performance" have always seemed mutually exclusive to me. Not that I ever put much thought into the subject.
What the the hell is a high performance crystal radio, anyway?

Usually designed around High Q coils. and quality variable capacitors (Silver plated) etc for sensitivity and selectivity, low loss..
One of the things about crystal radios is that they are supposed to have better audio quality due to the lack of distortion from all the different transistor stages in a modern radio...

Crap, now I have to spend even more time on google!
As an appliance operator, I have a huge amount of studying to do.

I'll shoehorn it in between porting my python2 code to python3 and keeping the missus mollified :Yaeh:

Not quite on point, but I've been playing with hamlib's python bindings. It's pretty amazing that I can talk directly to my '7300 with just a few lines of python code.
Small steps but an idea's forming in my head.
